Nahan was founded by King Karan Prakash in 1621. The palace was named after an incident involving the King when he was trying to kill a lion; the king was stopped by a sage named Baba Banwari Das who uttered the words “Nahar” meaning Don’t Kill.

The place has a variety of temples in town and was considered as a compulsory pilgrimage.

Nahan is situated at an altitude of 950m.It is closer to the plains as compared to the peaks. Nahan is a popular tourist destination due to its scenic beauty and picturesque surroundings. The forest routes filled with lush greenery adds to the calm nature of the place.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Ambala which is located at a distance of 100 kms from Nahan. Ambala is well connected with the major cities of India and has regular train plying from Delhi to Ambala.
By Air: The nearest airports are those of Dehradun and Chandigarh. The Chandigarh airport is located about 100 kms from Nahan while the Dehradun airport is 65 kms from the city. Both the airports are well connected with other major cities in India.
By Bus: Regular bus services are available from Chandigarh to Nahan.

Nahan offers you a variety of sight seeing and tourist recreational spots.

  • Choordhar Peak: It is located at 3650 m above sea level and provides a majestic view of the mountain peaks and deep valleys.
  • Jaggannath Temple:  The temple was constructed by Raja Budh Prakash in 1681 – as the place is supposed to have one of the rare occurrence of The Lord Jaggannath.
  • Jaitak Fort: A royal fort located near Jaitak hills. The fort is known to be have been made from the material recovered after the Nahan Fort was destroyed and debvastated in 1810.
  • Jamu Peak.
  • Pakka Talab.
  • Fishing: The ponds and river basin offer a perfect place to go fishing.
  • Rajbans: Alos known as Sirmouri Tal. It has historical importance and has several stories of curses and counters doing rounds about the old ruins of Rajbans.
